Palo Alto’s history dates back to the 1800s, when the area developed from agricultural land into a growing residential and educational community. The city takes its name from El Palo Alto, a historic redwood tree along San Francisquito Creek. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century helped spur development, while the founding of Stanford University in 1885 played a major role in shaping the city’s identity.
